Slater's Steakhouse served its last dinner in Five Points on May 17, after three and a half years on South Lumpkin Street. Neither of the two businesses announced for the village since then is a dinner restaurant. One is a nearly century-old Atlanta bakery. The other is a bagel shop. Both plan to open within a few blocks of the bakery that already sets the morning schedule on Lumpkin.
When those two openings are read alongside the bakery, coffee and chocolate shops already there, the stretch of South Lumpkin between the 1500 and 1600 blocks looks like Five Points' breakfast block. The rest of this post covers what is coming, what is open now, and the intersection project that will decide how easily you can walk between them.
What Has Been Announced, and Where
Henri's Bakery & Deli plans to open at 1573 S. Lumpkin St., in the former Five Points Subway. The Athens Banner-Herald reported on Aug. 19 that the company expects to open in fall 2026 but had not set a grand opening date. Flagpole repeated the fall timing on Sept. 10. As of early October, none of the locations listed on Henri's own website is in Athens. So the shop is still on its way.
The Bagel Hole, a Georgia-based franchise, will move into 1660 S. Lumpkin St., according to Flagpole's Aug. 17 food news. That address appeared on the Athens-Clarke County plans review agenda for Aug. 20, 2026, the county's administrative review step, for an interior renovation for a new restaurant. The company's locator currently lists five Georgia shops, in Cumming, Alpharetta, Dawsonville and Braselton, and no Athens location yet. No opening date or hours have been published.
The former Slater's space is the third piece. The Red & Black reported that the building had been sold to another Athens restaurant owner who plans to renovate it, but it did not name the buyer or the new concept. The same story said owners Jerry and Krista Slater made the decision mainly to diversify, not because of trouble at the steakhouse. Until that owner announces plans, nobody knows whether the space will serve breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Henri's Brings a 1929 Recipe Box
French pastry chef Henri Fiscus opened the bakery in Atlanta in 1929, and Atlanta Magazine identifies the current owner, Anthony DiNardo, as his great-grandson. The same piece calls the shortbread cookies with a dot of frosting on top iconic.
Henri's menu sells cheese straws in traditional, jalapeño and white cheddar varieties. Its deli lists a Turkey and Roast Beef Po Boy among guest favorites. That mix of pastry case and sandwich counter makes Henri's a daytime business more than a strictly early-morning one. In the village, it would cover the late-morning and lunch hours that a coffee stop alone does not.
The Morning Anchors Already on the Street
Before either newcomer opens, the Five Points morning runs on three businesses. Their posted hours show who is open when.
- Jittery Joe's Coffee – Five Points, 1230 S. Milledge Ave. Opens at 6:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. on weekends, with microroasted coffee and baked goods.
- Independent Baking Co., 1625 S. Lumpkin St. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Closed Monday.
- Condor Chocolates' Five Points cafe, 1658 S. Lumpkin St. Opens at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Independent Baking Co. is the one Henri's and The Bagel Hole will sit closest to. Kevin Scollo now owns the bakery and bakes there, having taken over from Thom Leonard. Its case includes croissants, morning rolls and a loaf named for the neighborhood, the Five Points Levain.
The posted hours leave clear gaps. On Mondays, Independent Baking is closed and Condor does not open until 9, so Jittery Joe's is the only early option of the three. The two Lumpkin shops on this list don't open before 7 a.m. on any day. Whether Henri's or The Bagel Hole fills those hours depends on schedules neither business has announced.
How Close Together These Addresses Are
In street-number order along South Lumpkin:
- Henri's Bakery & Deli, announced for 1573 S. Lumpkin
- Independent Baking Co., open at 1625 S. Lumpkin
- Condor Chocolates, open at 1658 S. Lumpkin
- The Bagel Hole, announced for 1660 S. Lumpkin
If both openings happen, four bakery, bagel or cafe businesses will sit within less than a hundred street numbers of each other on one side of the village. The Bagel Hole's address is next door to Condor's.
Jittery Joe's sits on the Milledge Avenue side of the village. For anyone combining coffee from one place with bread or a bagel from another, that means crossing at the Five Points intersection.
The Intersection Between the Coffee and the Bread
Athens-Clarke County lists the intersection as TSPLOST 2023 Project 27, "Five Points Intersection Safety Improvements." Flagpole reported on July 1 that a user group was working with a professional design team on concepts for Milledge Avenue, Milledge Circle and Lumpkin Street. The project will include:
- New crosswalks with a pedestrian-only signal phase
- Pedestrian refuges
- Other improvements across the three streets
According to the same report, the intersection could eventually become a roundabout, but the final design is more likely to stay within the existing right-of-way. No construction schedule has been published.
For a block adding morning businesses, a dedicated pedestrian phase matters on a 7:30 a.m. weekday as much as it did when the biggest draw on Lumpkin was a steakhouse dinner. The design is still a concept, so it may be a while before the crosswalk catches up with the new shops.
What to Watch For Over the Next Few Weeks
Three announcements will show how much the Five Points morning changes this year:
- Henri's opening date. The company has promised fall 2026. Its location page will likely add Athens when the shop is ready.
- The Bagel Hole's hours. The interior renovation went through county plans review in August. The hours will show whether it opens before 7 a.m. and covers Mondays.
- The former Slater's tenant. Whatever the unnamed buyer opens will decide whether the most recent change on this stretch of Lumpkin tilts toward morning or evening.
Until then, Jittery Joe's opens at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays and Independent Baking Co. opens at 7 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
